Rosa Zuniga, a Stilwell native and current practical nursing student at the Indian Capital Technology Center (ICTC) Tahlequah campus, is celebrating a milestone moment in her healthcare journey—one that began with an eighth‑grade campus tour and has now led to the opportunity to potentially save a life through stem cell and bone marrow donation.

Raised in Stilwell, Oklahoma, Zuniga spent most of her school years in Tahlequah Public Schools. It was during an ICTC tour in eighth grade that she first discovered her passion for healthcare, an experience she describes as “a lasting impression that sparked a clear sense of direction.”

After returning to Stilwell her sophomore year for a fresh start, Zuniga’s interest in healthcare continued to grow. By her senior year, she was enrolled in the Health Careers Certification (HCC) program at ICTC’s Stilwell campus. There, she became actively involved in HOSA–Future Health Professionals, competing in pathophysiology and earning a Top 10 placement.

During her time in HCC, Zuniga also learned about the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). A simple cheek swab added her to the national registry—a decision that would prove life‑changing.

Following her graduation in 2022, Zuniga earned her CNA certification and began working at a Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, where she remains employed today.

Now enrolled in the Practical Nursing program at ICTC Tahlequah and set to graduate in June, Zuniga continues to excel academically and professionally. This year, she competed in two HOSA events, earning First Place in both and advancing to the international competition in Indianapolis this June.

Amid these achievements, Zuniga recently received news that brought her journey full circle: she has been matched as a potential stem cell and bone marrow donor for a 59‑year‑old male patient in need.

“When I got the call, I immediately thought back to my senior year in HOSA when I did that simple cheek swab,” Zuniga said. “It was truly a full‑circle experience.”

District Superintendent Tony Pivec praised Zuniga’s compassion and commitment, stating: “Rosa’s willingness to step forward and potentially save a life speaks volumes about her character. Her generosity, courage, and dedication to serving others embody the very best of our students. We are incredibly proud of her and the example she sets for our entire community.”

Zuniga’s story highlights the profound impact of early career exploration, student organizations like HOSA, and the life‑saving potential of donor registries. As she prepares for graduation and international competition, she continues to embody the dedication and compassion that define the healthcare profession.

Indian Capital Technology Center has been named one of the “Top Workplaces” in America, as ranked by USA Today. This national honor is a powerful reflection of the culture, teamwork, and shared commitment that define ICTC. ICTC officially received this recognition on April 9 in Nashville, Tennessee.

While the award is national, the reason we earned it is entirely local—rooted in the people who make ICTC exceptional. “This award is a testament to the people who show up every day with purpose, passion, and pride,” said Superintendent Tony Pivec. “ICTC is a Top Workplace because of the way our staff supports one another, the way our partners invest in our mission, and the way our students inspire us. This recognition belongs to our entire community.” We also want to acknowledge the leadership that helped build the foundation for this moment. The culture we enjoy today did not happen overnight. It is the result of years of steady vision and commitment.

“ICTC’s success is the product of long-term dedication from many leaders, educators, and partners,” shared Board President Darrell Russell. “Our board is proud of the environment our staff has created—one where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to make a difference.”

Among those leaders is Tom Stiles, whose tenure as Superintendent helped shape the strong, student-centered culture that continues to guide ICTC today. “Seeing ICTC recognized on a national stage is incredibly meaningful,” said Tom Stiles, former Superintendent and current Board Member. “So many people have poured their hearts into this institution over the years. This award reflects the strength of our team and the commitment of our community.”

ICTC’s partnerships—including our important collaborations with Connors State College — continue to expand opportunities for students and strengthen the relevance of our programs. These relationships are a vital part of what makes ICTC a thriving, forward‑looking institution.

At its core, this award is about teamwork. It celebrates the collective effort of individuals and organizations working together to create a place where employees thrive and students succeed. ICTC has always been strongest when we move forward as one team, and this recognition is a testament to that spirit.

As we celebrate this milestone, we also look ahead. Being named a Top Workplace in America challenges us to continue nurturing the culture that brought us here—one built on respect, collaboration, and a shared belief in the power of career and technology education.
